Why Coconut Oil Soap Is So Good for Indian Skin
Coconut oil makes some of the best soap in the world. Lauric acid, lather, mildness and the research on coconut oil for dry and sensitive skin — explained simply.

In Kerala, coconut oil is not a trend — it is in the kitchen, the hair and the bath. It also happens to be one of the finest soap-making oils in the world. Here is why our soaps start with it.
What makes coconut oil special
Coconut oil is unusually rich in lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that makes up close to half of its fats. In soap, lauric acid produces:
- A big, fluffy lather — even in hard water.
- A hard, long-lasting bar.
- Strong cleansing power for sweat and oil.
On its own, a 100% coconut-oil soap can be a little too cleansing for some skin. That is why good formulations balance it with conditioning oils — in Anjenna Plus, sesame and almond.
What research says about coconut oil and skin
- A randomised, double-blind trial found extra virgin coconut oil as effective and safe as mineral oil as a moisturiser for mild to moderate dry skin (xerosis).
- In adults with atopic dermatitis, a trial found virgin coconut oil reduced Staphylococcus aureus on the skin and improved symptoms.
- A trial in children with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis found topical virgin coconut oil improved severity scores and skin hydration compared with mineral oil.
These studies used coconut oil left on the skin rather than soap — but they help explain why coconut-based products have such a long reputation for comfort.
Soap made from coconut vs. "beauty bars"
Many supermarket bars are made from cheaper fats blended with synthetic detergents and fillers. A coconut-oil soap with a high Total Fatty Matter (Anjenna Plus tested at 86.04%, Grade 1) is mostly genuine soap: you get more cleansing per gram and fewer additives.
Does it suit every skin?
- Oily and combination skin: excellent — thorough but not stripping.
- Normal skin: ideal for daily use.
- Very dry skin: choose a coconut soap balanced with conditioning oils, use lukewarm water, and moisturise after.
- Sensitive skin: patch-test first, as with any new product.
The Anjenna Herbals way
Our soap begins with pure coconut oil and adds neem, turmeric, sesame, almond and chaulmoogra. It is handmade in Alappuzha, cured, and packed by the people who make it.
